How to Choose the Right Pavers for your Driveway

A paved driveway can sometimes be the first impression that some people may have of your home. If you are the type that takes impressions to heart, you may want to consider a paver, which can do the job that you need to do in order to meet your full expectations.

Basic Pavers

How do you come up with these expectations? By knowing the basics on pavers so you know what to choose:

  • Clay – this choice is made from all-natural clay products which are folded over and over again, shaped, and put in a kiln at high temperatures. The high cooking temperature makes the clay particles fuse together which makes this material resistant to staining. Not often used for driveways as this paver can easily crack.

  • Concrete– as compared to clay, these have a greater variety of colours and shapes available; they are also a lot sturdier than clay pavers and with all the effects of non-staining. Because of its durability, this paver is often used for industrial means like highways, roads, or driveways.

  • Natural Masonry – this use natural stones such as limestone, which is rich in pattern and colour, then cut to a specific shape or into slate form to create a random design with all natural colours and materials.

So that’s the first step in choosing a paver. Now that you know what material or method you want your paver to be in, you need to choose a preferred pattern.

Pattern Pavers

  • Herringbone – a classic design and still very popular to this day. Placing rectangle bricks in the right angle adjacent form surrounded by a frame of neatly aligned bricks, sometimes in a different colour.

  • Stack Bond – a pattern for the tastes of a simpler person, this simply stacks pavers on top of one another, whether in the straight square form or sideways to seemingly appear in a diamond shape.

  • Stretcher Bond – the most common paver design which utilises the old brick layout design. It is simple and often used as a boarder or frame for larger paver designs. This is also commonly used for large scale jobs.

  • Basket weave – this pattern often uses two different colours. Two rectangles are aligned crosswise parallel to one another with two other pavers of a contrasting colour next to it in a lengthwise parallel pattern. This paver pattern achieves a sort of chess board effect.

  • Circular Paving – often used in gardens or at the centre of stretcher bond, these create a circular design with lengthwise pavers aligned to form a circle.

Depending on what you want your paver for and where you want to put it, the outcome could be anywhere along the lines of great. Pavers provide an impression in themselves no matter what pattern or type is used and is always a great way to improve a home’s outside appearance.
